Of all the things that Tulsa is known for, hot steamy summers are near the top of the list. And with the heat comes pouring rain, thunderstorms, and other forms of precipitation. When the weather gets crazy, we head indoors. Luckily, Tulsa has lots of fun indoor places to beat the heat. Here are a few of our favorites.

At Beacon Homes, many of our communities are conveniently located near farmer’s markets. And although you can purchase various types of produce at the local grocery store, nothing beats the fresh quality and seasonal selection of produce found at farmer’s markets.
Why Seasonal Produce Is a Winner
Freshly harvested produce has a higher nutritional value. For example, a stalk of broccoli from a local farmer will have more vitamin C content than a pack of broccoli from a grocery store.
There is a science to growing produce. When produce is grown out of season, ripening agents are used throughout the process. Ripening agents are special gases and chemicals for plants. The problem is that these agents can alter a plant’s essential properties. This is why some mass-produced fruits are extra shiny. Seasonal produce from a farmer’s market is better for you because it’s never altered. It’s the definition of “farm to table.”
Fresh, seasonal produce also tastes better. Science is the key because proper farming is all about strategic growth and development. Fruits and vegetables develop better flavors when they grow in their natural habitat in season.
If you buy a home near a farmer’s market, you’ll have access to delicious, seasonal produce.
Plant Your Roots in Oklahoma
If you want to support local farmers in Oklahoma, here are five noteworthy farmer’s markets you should have on your radar.
The Edmond Farmer’s Market in Edmond
The Edmond Farmer’s Market has been in business since 1988. It’s a popular destination in downtown Edmond for bakers, gardeners, food manufacturers, artisans, and ranchers. However, it’s primarily a place where locals can buy fresh food.
Want to live near the freshest and tastiest food? Check out these communities close by
Many people flock to the Arcadia Farmer’s Market because it’s a great venue for special events. At this location, you can buy produce from a farmer or a tasty dish from a food truck.
Looking to move near this market? Look no further than these communities.
Joyce and Don Carmichael run Carmichael’s produce year-round. From sweet corn and plump tomatoes, the vendors here sell the essential fruits and veggies for every family.
Take advantage of this incredible selection year-round by living in
Fresh produce is the key to a healthy lifestyle, so it’s wise to support a local farmer’s market. If you need help finding a home with plenty of markets nearby, turn to the team at Beacon Homes.

Located around 110 miles apart in the heart of Oklahoma, the major cities of Tulsa and Oklahoma City, or OKC, are rapidly becoming hotspots for remote working. There are many reasons people are relocating to Oklahoma and working remotely from home in the state’s two largest cities.
Appealing Relocation Packages
Through the Tulsa Remote program, Tulsa is offering cash incentives to remote workers willing to relocate to the city for at least a year. Eligible individuals receive $10,000, either in split payments or as a bulk payment towards the purchase price of a local home. Those wanting to escape the home office from time to time can also benefit from free membership to co-working spaces.
Low Cost of Living
Compared with nationwide figures, the overall cost of living is lower in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Housing costs are particularly more affordable, with average costs for groceries, utilities and transportation also below national norms.
Flourishing Local Economies
Both Tulsa and OKC have lower rates of unemployment than the U.S. as a whole, and the job market is growing in both cities. This would be especially appealing for remote workers who have spouses or adult children who would be looking for jobs locally after relocation.
Good Health Care
As compared with national statistics, Oklahoma City and Tulsa each have a higher number of physicians per capita. There are high-performing hospitals in each city, including St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa and Integris Baptist Medical Center in OKC. Both cities have a wealth of pharmacies and clinics to further support residents’ health.
Great Education
OKC and Tulsa are both home to great schools, ideal for remote workers relocating with their families in tow. The state also has excellent opportunities for further and higher education. In fact, The University of Tulsa is often referred to as “The Harvard of the Midwest”!
Excellent Connections
Located in the heart of the U.S., with excellent road connections, OKC and Tulsa are both terrific bases for traveling to other parts of the country. With Oklahoma as a base for remote working, people really can enjoy the flexibility of easily working from new pastures from time to time. Plus, each city is well-connected by air routes, with Tulsa International Airport (TUL) and Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) close to hand.
Awesome Leisure Options
Wherever you’re working from, it’s important to have plenty of ways to enjoy your downtime. Not only do Tulsa and OKC boast a wealth of amenities, such as shopping, restaurants, bars, churches and local businesses, but each also has an array of cool attractions and recreational facilities.

If you are considering relocating to the great state of Oklahoma — either for the low cost of living, great career opportunities, unique culture, or tons of activities — you’ve chosen well. There are so many advantages of living in this state that’s located smack dab in the heart of the country, that embraces innovation just as much as its rich history. There are many more, but here are our top 10 reasons to relocate to Oklahoma — particularly its two largest cities of Oklahoma City and Tulsa!
1) Low Cost of Living
The overall cost of living in Oklahoma is well below the national average, which means your dollar stretches further for both basics like utilities and food, and for the fun stuff like shopping and entertainment. A new home in Oklahoma City or Tulsa is an especially good investment, since both markets are currently about half as expensive as the national average, and home prices continue to rise.
2. Fun Activities for Everyone
There are tons of interesting, fun, and downright exciting things to do in Oklahoma! In Oklahoma City, stop by the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum for a casual stroll through the recently-renovated, state-of-the-art facility, or turn the energy way up at a Thunders’ basketball game at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. In Tulsa, spend a Saturday night in the Blue Dome Entertainment District for tasty food, cocktails, and live entertainment, or bring the kids to the fantastic Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, about 20 minutes south of Tulsa.
3. Unique Shopping Districts
The state’s two biggest cities have some of the most unique specialty shopping in the Midwest! In OKC, head to Stockyards City to stock up on quintessential western wear like cowboy boots, hats, and jeans. Western Avenue has plenty of one-of-a-kind shops for antiques and records. And in Midtown you’ll find hip and trendy stores for the fashion-forward shopper.
In Tulsa head to The Boxyard, an innovative shopping experience where each retailer is housed in a refurbished shipping container. No big box stores here — only little ones! From women’s wear to skate gear, if it’s unique enough you’ll find it here. In Utica Square you’ll find the perfect mix of upscale national retailers and smaller, independent shops.
4. Amazing Restaurant Scene
Did you know? Oklahoma is a test market for many national restaurant chains. The state is literally in the heart of the county and its residents represent a microcosm of the American population. If a restaurant or new dish does well here — chances are it’ll be a national success!
Oklahoma cities also have their fair share of local restaurants that attract foodies from all over the state. From BBQ to international flavors, you can find the best of it here. In the OKC area try the Onion Burger at Tuckers, or stroll through Chisolm Creek and take your pick from a number of excellent casual and fine dining places. In Tulsa, try any of the restaurants at Mother Road Market or along Cherry Street and you won’t be disappointed.
Oklahoma is especially known for a good old-fashioned hamburger, and all the variations of it! Check out The 13 Best Burgers in OKC and Tulsa and add as many as you can to your “must-do” list the next time you’re in town.
5. Not Your Ordinary Public Parks
Public parks are a source of pride for many Oklahoma cities, and with acres upon acres of green space, walking and biking trails, gardens, playgrounds, water features, and other attractions, residents take full advantage of them. In OKC the main attractions are Lake Hefner, Martin Park Nature Center, and Scissortail Park. In Tulsa, The Gathering Place is a 100-acre, world-class, riverfront park with various activites like Mist Mountain and Chapman Adventure Playground, educational activities, and year-round events. It’s the ultimate park, and it’s right here in Tulsa!
6. Outdoor Festivals
As one of the top states with the most days of sunshine in a year (231 days, on average), Oklahomans live for outdoor festivals. The largest are the state’s music festivals — with sounds ranging from country to metal and everything in between. Must-sees include Normal Music Festival in Norman, American Heritage Musical Festival in Grove, and Rocklahoma in Pryor.
As mentioned earlier, Oklahoma is at the geographic center of the country, and that’s useful for a lot more than just testing restaurants! The state is located on the crossroads of I-40 and I-35, which means you have a straight shot to either coast. For those who travel often for work or fun, you can get to Dallas in just 3.5 hours, Arkansas in 2 hours, and Wichita, KS in just over 3 hours.
9) All Four Seasons
Due to the tilt of the Earth and Oklahoma’s location, the state experiences all four seasons in all their splendor. Whether you love sunny summers for swimming or cold winters to cozy up to a fireplace, you can enjoy it all here in Oklahoma. There’s also plenty to do in each season — lake trips in the summer, balloon fests in the fall, eagle spotting in the winter, and state parks and museums in the spring. Every season is unique and wonderful!
10) Job Opportunities
If you are looking for a career opportunity in aviation, biotechnology, energy, transportation, or business services, there’s a good chance you’ll find it in Oklahoma City or Tulsa. Both cities have unemployment rates well below the national average, and expect positive job growth over the next ten years.
Oklahoma is a great state to consider for relocation. If you are looking for new homes in Oklahoma City or Tulsa, or if you just need some relocation advice, contact us — we’d love to help!
Can you get too much of a good thing? When you’re talking about your favorite food, maybe. But a great lifestyle is never too much to handle. The Yorktown community in Jenks, OK, reflects that truth. This neighborhood, just outside of Tulsa, keeps growing with the demand for living here. And we responded. Now, you can cross the bridge to Covington, Beacon Homes’ new phase at Yorktown—and the last one before this community is complete.
Covington is nestled in the back of Yorktown, connected to the rest of the community with a bridge. What a great way to experience the privacy of your neighborhood!
The Covington section of Yorktown will feature our new collection of floor plans. Each one is named after a famous lighthouse around the country. We’re currently building the Liston home design, inspired by the Liston Front Range Lighthouse and Liston Rear Range Lighthouse, both of which have stood for more than a century along the Delaware River.
This new home, at 421 East 126th Street South, is an expanded version of the Liston. We’ve extended the flex room in the original design to create a fourth bedroom and added 100 square feet to the master bedroom. The single-level home now offers 2,261 square feet of interior living space. This is a home you’ll want to see for yourself, so you can experience the wonderful flow from room to room, the openness of the main living area, and the view of the patio and backyard from this space. You need to see how the master suite is designed to give you a relaxing retreat from the household activity. The bedroom feels more spacious with the tray ceiling. The bathroom gives you both a step-in shower and a soaking tub that is too inviting to ignore. And the walk-in closet is almost a room on its own.
Just down the street, we’ve begun construction on a Fenwick floor plan at 425 East 126th Street South. This design is named for the Fenwick Island Lighthouse that was built to prevent the shipwrecks that had been occurring off the coast of Fenwick Island, at the border between Delaware and Maryland.
The 2,076-square-foot Fenwick is great for a first-time homebuyer, growing family, or empty-nester. All on one level, the home uses every square foot to your benefit. The split floor plan separates the master suite from the other 2 bedrooms. The second full bath and the powder room are smartly situated near the main living area, for anyone’s convenience. The Fenwick’s center island kitchen is designed for efficiency and styled for visual appeal.
Beacon Homes also includes a flex room in the Fenwick. Easily accessible from the foyer or the garage entry, the room gives you many options to expand your living space. A study, home office, playroom, hobby studio, exercise room, library, or even a guest room would work well here.
These first two homes in Covington will be move-in ready later this spring, and we have many more homesites where you can build your own lighthouse-inspired Beacon Home. Come visit us now to see the plans for Covington as we begin this last chance to live in Yorktown near the family-friendly city of Tulsa. Contact Beth for more information and to schedule your personal tour.

That’s why we’re proud to build our distinct homes around OKC, a vibrant, ever-growing city that “specializes” in fulfilling experiences.

What It’s Like Living in OKC
When you decide to build a brandnew home in OKC, you become a part of a community and neighborhood that understand what “home” means. From the locally owned coffee shop you’ll look forward to visiting every morning to the charming streets that will take you to familiar and new places, one of the OKC neighborhoods where we build is where the best chapters of your life will unfold.
If you currently live in or near a larger city, you may be at a point in your life where the constant hustle and bustle doesn’t excite you anymore. But that doesn’t mean you want to give it all up. On the other hand, if you live in a rural area, you might be looking for a closer proximity to downtown excursions, without sacrificing peace and quiet. In a neighborhood around OKC, you truly have the best of both worlds. You’ll enjoy the serenity of a scenic, secure Beacon Homes neighborhood, while being close to the exciting things you love downtown, without all of the congestion, high prices, and cramped space of larger cities.
In a new Beacon home, you’ll enjoy the comfort of an open-concept living area that’s designed to bring family and friends together, along with a wide open outdoor area to enjoy the seasons — then when you want to explore downtown, you have the family-friendly fun of OKC just a short drive away.
Things to Do in OKC
From shopping, dining, and unique museums to lakes, nature centers, and the area’s best parks, there’s never a shortage of things to enjoy and new adventures to explore in this one-of-a-kind city that’s so easy to call your hometown.
Shopping: There’s never a wrong time for “retail therapy” in OKC. Whether you enjoy browsing unique antiques at a boutique shop, or exploring a mall and collection of outlet stores, this city has everything you need for a fun shopping excursion with your family or friends. From local, charming stores with gifts, jewelry, and apparel like Antique Avenue, 50 Penn Place Art Gallery, Tin Lizzies, and Black Scintilla, to larger shopping areas like Penn Square Mall, OKC Outlets, Casady Square Shopping Center, and the Plaza District, you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for (and even a few fun surprises along the way).

Outdoor Recreation: There’s truly nothing like the great outdoors in OKC. When you’re looking to “disconnect” from technology and explore beyond the city, you have easy access to scenic, wonder-filled outdoor excursions nearby. If you love a little adventure, check out the Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River, home to RIVERSPORT, where you can go biking, kayaking, rowing, paddle boarding, and so much more. (RIVERSPORT is now offering indoor skiing and snowboarding!) For a more relaxing outing, go for a leisurely walk or have a picnic along Lake Hefner, play a round of golf at one of the many public courses, go for a hike along the city’s 10 interconnected trails, or explore the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, which provides 1,000 acres of hiking, fishing, and bird watching opportunities.
Dining: With a wide variety of dining establishments, from gourmet restaurants and cocktail bars to pizza parlors and hip breweries, it’s safe to say that OKC is a certified “foodie” city. No matter what kind of experience you’re looking for, whether a fun-filled day out with your kids or a romantic date night in the evening, you’re sure to find a delicious eatery to fulfill all of your cravings. Take a journey on the “culinary edge” at Grey Sweater, enjoy cajun-inspired dishes at Bourbon St. Cafe, stop for brunch at Stella, indulge in street food with a twist at Big Truck Tacos, treat yourself to oysters and cocktails at Pearl’s Oyster Bar, and the list goes on.
Arts and Culture: Concert venues, Broadway shows, art galleries, museums, orchestras, ballet, murals… the streets of OKC are alive with a thriving arts scene. From the colorful murals at Plaza Walls and historic Film Row, to Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, a hub of exhibitions, performances, and public programming, you and your family will enjoy the endless array of vibrant culture that awaits. Grab a few friends and check out the stunning art at Paseo Arts District, take your kids to see a Broadway show at Civic Center Music Hall, or simply roam the streets and marvel at the remarkable street art around every corner.
