How Long Does It Take To Build A Home?

build a home

That’s a great question with many different answers! All builders have a different process and timeline ranging from a few months to even a couple of years to build a home. The size of the home, the number of options offered, and the complexity of the floor plan can affect the process.

If you’ve decided to buy a new construction home, you’re in for an exciting journey, especially if you choose a home that is yet to be built (to-be-built homes). With this option, it’s important to understand the home building process so you know exactly what to expect throughout the build. This will ease any apprehension and help you plan your move accordingly.

Beacon Homes is unlike other Oklahoma home builders because we not only have a simple building process, but we also have the Beacon Guarantee. The Beacon Guarantee is our commitment to delivering your home on time and at an unchanging price or we will pay your first month’s mortgage payment. More on that later! But first, let’s guide you through the home building timeline, the steps involved, and why choosing the right builder, like Beacon Homes, can make all the difference.

Pre-Construction Approvals and Permits

After you pick your homesite, floor plan, and design selections, we’ll start the home building process. To build a home, obtaining the necessary permits and approvals typically kicks things off. This includes:

  • Zoning and building permits
  • Homeowners’ association approvals (if applicable)

This phase ensures all legal requirements are met and your home is built to code.

Site Preparation and Foundation

The initial building steps include excavation, leveling the site, and preparing the ground for the foundation. The concrete foundation is then poured. Efficient site preparation and a proper foundation are critical for supporting the home and help with future settling to ensure a solid foundation.

Framing is building the home’s skeleton. This is where your home takes shape and you can better visualize the layout such as where rooms, doors, and windows will be. It’s a great time to take a hard hat tour (touring when framing is complete before drywall is installed). This stage includes:

  • Erecting walls
  • Installing roof trusses
  • Adding windows and doors

Mechanical Installations

With the structure in place, mechanical systems are installed:

  • Electrical wiring
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC systems

This phase is essential as it sets the groundwork for functional living spaces. Proper installation is crucial for long-term reliability and safety.

Insulation and Drywall

Insulation and drywall create your home’s interior. There are many types of insulation, but common types are fiberglass, cellulose, and foam. Good insulation is vital for energy efficiency and comfort. Next, drywall is hung, mudded, and sanded. This further defines your home’s living spaces.

Interior and Exterior Finishes

This is where the final interior and exterior touches are added. It’s a very exciting stage as your home starts to come to life with the details you selected. Things like painting, flooring, cabinetry, vanities, fixtures, siding, and landscaping are completed.

Final Inspections and Walkthrough

Before you’re ready to move in, the final step of the new home construction timeline includes final inspections and a new home walkthrough. You’ll walk through the home with a specialist to make sure everything is up to standard and there are no issues or damages. It’s also the stage where you’ll learn about the features and how to use various systems and components.

So what does that all mean for you? How long will all this take? Overall, the process can vary from 7-12 months depending on several factors. The first one is our schedule. We utilize a slot schedule. That means we have planned how many homes we can start in each location each week. Our sales team can check our schedule to tell you when our next opening is. Once you sign your sales agreement we can lock in a slot for you. That also secures your Beacon Guarantee. Weather and timely approval of your selections can also cause the timeline to vary.

The good news is that at Beacon, we have a team member there to guide you through each part of the home building process and keep you informed of the progress we are making.
